What is a Business Address?

A business address is the official location associated with a company for registration with the state, receiving government or legal documents, and conducting business. It can be different from the company’s physical office or mailing address, depending on how the business operates. For example, many remote or international founders use a registered U.S. business address provided by a formation service, such as the one included in Clemta’s packages.

This address appears on formation documents, EIN applications, and bank account records. It’s also often required for opening merchant accounts, applying for business credit, or communicating with government agencies. The business address must typically be a physical address—not just a P.O. Box—especially for legal notices, bank account applications, and tax filings. Some states may allow a virtual office or mail-forwarding service, but requirements vary.

Keeping your business address current is important for compliance. If it changes, you must update it with the Secretary of State and other relevant agencies to avoid missing critical correspondence or falling out of good standing.
