A secure U.S. Treasury online system for paying federal taxes electronically.
What is The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)?
The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) is a free, secure service provided by the U.S. Department of the Treasury that allows businesses, individuals, and tax professionals to pay federal taxes online or by phone. It’s available 24/7 and can be used to pay a variety of federal tax obligations, including income taxes, payroll taxes, corporate taxes, and estimated quarterly taxes.
Businesses, especially U.S. entities owned by non-U.S. residents, often use EFTPS to meet payroll tax obligations or make timely estimated tax payments. Enrollment requires a U.S. bank account, a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN, such as an EIN or SSN), and mailing verification from the IRS. Once registered, users can schedule payments in advance and track their history, which helps ensure compliance and avoid late payment penalties.
EFTPS is particularly important for companies with recurring tax liabilities, as the IRS considers electronic payments through this system one of the most reliable ways to ensure funds are received on time. For non-U.S. founders, having a U.S. bank account linked to EFTPS is key, since international wire transfers are generally not supported.
